Shimokitazawa (下北沢); Tokyo

Getting here: Take the Odakyu Line from Shinjuku Station or the Keio-Inokashira Line from Shibuya Station (about 20 minutes from either)

Shimokitazawa is a charming indie / hippie-ish neighbourhood with a number of small cafes, second hand clothes stores, and small independent retailers. Stumbled upon the neighbourhood on a late Sunday afternoon, and managed to get a cup of takeaway black coffee (¥180) from Bookends Coffee Service to accompany my evening perambulation. By and large, the streets and shops were fairly empty, with the largest crowd congregating at the base of the train station, and at the nearby supermarket, Ozeki Shimokitazawa, which is a two story outfit carrying an amazing variety of tomatoes, and a good selection of takeaway sushi (secured dinner from here for around ¥400).
